Difference between Google Panda and Google Penguin

For those who are dealing with SEO and blogging, Google Panda and Penguin update are no new. However, this article will throw light on some of the most important elements of it and it is for the uninitiated.

Panda and penguin are the two major updates from goggle that caused a lot of commotion among webmasters. These two most discussed goggle updates, having taken a toll on all online marketers in terms of ranking. It was after these two updates, several developers started to plan a perfect search engine optimization tactic that would crack in traffic. This article will bring out the difference between the two.
Ever since the launch of these updates, there has been a very strong buzz among webmasters on how to develop a perfect SEO plan that will withstand all these updates and still rank. Getting closer to both of them, let us see in detail.

Panda- The Panda update from Google was launched during February 2011, generally as a change in its search results ranking algorithm. The foremost purpose of this Google update was just to keep those substandard and low-content sites away from the top ranking results and this effort brought traffic to the actual quality sites while eradicating the ones that were junk. As a result, a lot of websites with massive amount of promotion, or those with duplicate and low-quality content, faced a drastic decline in the rankings. From the time this update was launched, there have been many updates to it ranging to over approximately 22 in total.

Penguin - Google Penguin was the next update that gave another severe blow to the SEO experts and this was launched in April 2012. The fundamental idea of this update was very simple, it was to penalize and decrease the rankings of sites that fall foul of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines set the by the search engine. Websites that was lethargic on certain key factors faced drastic change in rankings. To be precise, sites that practiced duplicate content, keyword stuffing and cloaking were affected badly.

Having said all that, the penalties issued for this update are different. A website penalized by Panda was easily fixed compared to that of Penguin, however both were time-consuming to fix. While panda give the impression of being for content and keeping up with high quality updates and postings can effortlessly fix a penalty from Panda.  On the other hand, Penguin needed more modifications.  More often than not, the use of obsessive link building can with no trouble cause a website to be smacked by Penguin’s penalties.

Google’s Disavow Link Tool is the most important tool to help do away with Penguin’s penalty.

Search engine optimization is something that will continue to change and it has changed because of Google’s algorithmic updates such as Panda and Penguin. Being updated with the right set of information and maintain a site as it should be by following the right set of guidelines is what helps in the long run. A better and right strategy will always help you achieve huge traffic.

What Is Google Pigeon update?

Google’s Pigeon was commenced on July 24, 2014 for U.S. English results and it is the code name given to one of its local search algorithm updates. Focusing to scale up the ranking of local listing in a search that are connected to traditional web search ranking signals, this update also had an impact in the search results shown in Google Maps down with the regular Google search results. To be precise, this update provided results based on the location of the user along with the listing that was to be had in the local directory. That being said, Google stated that this new algorithmic update would improve their distance and location ranking parameters.

Even though, this update didn’t have a drastic effect to a website, the main intention of this update was to advance the quality of local searches and make available more relevant results to the user. In order to execute this at its best, Google was dependent on factors such as location and distance. This revision altered the local listings in the search results; together with this, the local directory sites were also given preference.

The function of Google Pigeon is to provide first choice to local search results which was considered essential because it was quite useful for the user and local businesses. When this update was released, webmasters responded differently and it can be said that this update received mixed responses. While some was crabby about the ranking being gone down, quite a few of the other webmasters reported advancement in the search rankings. As per the webmaster perceptive, this update had location and distance as key elements of the search tactics. And it was also observed that the local directory listings were getting inclination in web results.

Incorporated deeper into its preceding algorithm, this was tied into Google's search capabilities to take account of hundreds of ranking signals the business uses, counting other features such as Knowledge Graph, spelling correction, synonyms and more. Having said all that, and on all these fluctuations, Google's take was that they would not detail the modifications in the future.

What Is Google Penguin update?

The second major Google algorithm that took all webmasters on a roller coaster ride was the penguin update that dealt with link quality. Websites that purchased links or having acquired the same that is of low-quality via low-quality directories, blog spam, or link badges and info graphics will find their sites no longer ranking for search terms.
You don’t have to be concerned about Penguin affecting your website unless and until you have done some vague link building. You definitely have to be concerned, if you have been engaged in such activities in the past or have used such tactics to get unnatural links. Guest blogging is a good example of this, few years ago it was fine, but now, it is not acceptable, and moreover, it is not a great way of building links. Similarly, requesting the site visitors or members to post badges that allied to your website was accepted up to that time, however now it is not acknowledged and definitely results in Penguin or a link manual action.

Algorithmic Penguin and Link Manual Actions- Google’s penguin update is definitely algorithmic in nature and there are no chances for it to be raised by Google manually, despite the consequences of the reason why those links might be spotting to a website.

Perplexing the subject to some extent is that there is a detached manual action for low-quality links and that one can be lifted by Google on one occasion the links have been sorted and cleaned up. This action can be executed with a reassessment appeal in Google Search Console. With that being said, websites can be impacted by both a linking manual action and Penguin at the same time.

This update what is named as penguin will only deal with a site’s incoming links. The links pointing to the site in question is what considered by Google and it doesn’t have anything to do with the outgoing links from that site. Meanwhile, you should also know that it is imperative to make a note of one thing that there is also a manual action related directly to a site’s outgoing links, consequently, the pages and sites you link could end up in a manual action while also de-indexing the site until those links are cleaned up.

If you feel that your site is negatively impacted by penguin, then it is important for you to do a link audit and do away with or disavow such spammy and low-quality links.

Google Search Console takes into account a list of back links for site owners, but be alert that it also includes links that are already “nofollowed”. Your site will have any impact, if the link is nofollowed; however, you need to commit to memory that the site could remove that nofollow in the future without a word of warning. When you are checking your site for other things related to this particular update, you should also ensure some of the other details which will be discussed in the next article.

What is Google Panda update?

Panda is one of Google’s major algorithmic update that took a toll on all webmasters. It affected the search results in a significant way and made the biggest impact on search which is known to everyone. Taking into consideration a website’s content quality, the main intention of this update is to eradicate sites with duplicate and low-quality content from ranking in the search results.

Google’s panda update has created a lot of havoc and controversies to webmasters who followed the short-cut method of bringing traffic to their website. As a result, sites having low-quality and duplicate contents were blown away. A lot of article submission sites were affected because of this update namely Ezine, suite101, wisegeek, buzzle, hubpages and many more. If you give a damn, then you are thrown away- remember.

How to defend from panda?

The answer to this question is very simple. The main target of Panda algorithm is to eliminate websites that contain low-quality and duplicate contents from ranking in the search engines.  That being said, in order to prevent Google Panda from negatively impacting your site, create contents that are useful to the user and avoid filling junk stuffs; it is as simple as that. By this means you can stay away from getting affected by this update, and can direct your user the right way and produce more organic traffic.

Determining quality

Seeing that, it is all about quality of the content. You need to ensure that your core focus is only on the same. Having said that, if you are besieged to make out such type of content, you can look in search analytics or your site’s analytics program focusing the individual pages!

If a particular page is ranking in Google and receiving enough traffic means then it is so obvious that the search engine is viewing it as quality enough to show high enough in the search results that people are landing there from those Google’s search results. On the other hand, if a page lacks traffic, don’t come to a conclusion that the content is bad, look out for other factors, but you can give a closer look at the content and consider adding a paragraph or two and can make it even more presentable and readable.

How to withstand panda?

Any step taken to remove low-quality content is said to help you deal with this algorithm, however, we have managed list out some of the other handy things that will help you withstand from such a major update like panda.

·       Clean your whole website

·       Remove all scraped content and play down duplicate template content

·       Be careful with affiliate links, ads, and too many outbound links with keywords

·       No multiple pages with the same keyword and no pages should contact one or two paragraphs of text

·       Fix all duplicate anchor text and links from article directories/low quality sites

·       Get rid of auto generated content and roundup/comparison type of pages

·       Work out on the poor internal linking structure

When you are making an effort to work out on these aforesaid things, you can withstand by and large.

Malicious duplicate content can undoubtedly impinge on your SEO. However, from a Panda point of view, if your core focus is on getting your site ranking well again in Google after a Panda hit, leave it until the end. Google is generally pretty good with reference to sorting it out, and if not, it's something that can be fixed with either some redirects or canonicals.
